Tryniac War Veterans of the Ultramarines First Company

by Eric A.

The purpose of this army is to serve three main goals being:

Create a colorful, exciting tabletop army that will test my conversion and painting skills
Utilize new units that I don’t normally play with and have a solid force.
Have fun and be able to play this army on any given occasion.

Now along those lines I sat down many months ago to begin planning for this new adventure. While looking at upcoming releases and deciding on which army to pick, I also happen to be rereading one of my favorite novels from the black library “Warriors of Ultramar”. With the recent release of the 5th edition codex for space marines my choice was simple. The ultramarines first company, but with a twist as it is difficult to actually justify a completely terminator army, once again a decision was made. There would be not one terminator in the entire army to start with.

After all that I began looking at what models I had sitting around waiting to be used. I have a Landraider with a Prometheus kit from forgeworld as well as 1st company terminator doors for it. Ok, check one command vehicle. Now for someone to ride in it, so came the command squad. But who would lead them, and what was his purpose. Well once again I was drawn to the codex for answers. After reviewing the codex I settled on chaplain cassius, as he is the founder of the war vets. Then an idea wiggled into the back of my head. While space marines are rapid strike fighters why not create a mechanized force. I would highly doubt that marines would take the time to walk everywhere and the idea of the nids swarming marines on foot. So yet again I have now decided on a mechanized trynanic warrior force.

So I began the slow process of creating a solid force that would need to be able to move shot, and capture the attention of all of my foes. The force would contain the following units for sure that would be the core of my army:

-Command Squad led by chaplain cassius mounted in a Prometheus Landraider
-Demi-Squad of Marines with no heavy weapons mounted in a Razorback
-Scout Squad lead by Sgt. Telion, mounted in a Land Speeder Storm
-Predator with Auto Cannon, Heavy bolters, and Chronus

This would give me a small force capable of moving and shooting. Since most of my foes would normally be mass armies the weapon of choice would have to heavy bolters and I would be forgoing heavy weapons in squads as they would to cumbersome to drag around and shoot. While this might be fool hardy I am counting on the heavy bolters of the vehicles to lay down supporting fire.. With the Landraider, Razorback, Landspeeder, and Predator being able to utilize their Heavy Bolters for 24 shots per turn with 15 of those being twin linked.

Now that I have a solid core force I would need something to add that spice of life to this army. That would be the use of not one but two dreadnoughts. Now lucky for me Forgeworld has decided to create not only a chapter specific dread but a trynid hunter as well. So that is a must have as well as a mark IV model to help out as well. They will both be armed for taking out mass armies as well. So I will be using them with the rules for the Siege dreadnoughts. That means inferno cannons and ccw’s for both of them. And while I am at it the new sternguard models will be a nice addition to my work in progress. So a squad of them loaded into a drop pod for a rapid strike when needed was in order.

At this point I have a reasonable force in mind and the means to deal with most armies for rapid games. While this army could hardly hold its own in a prolonged battle I have no doubt that the main three objectives have been met so far.

Alex's "Luna Wolves" Space Marines beat Ed's Daemonhunters

Alex's "Luna Wolves" Space Marines beat Ed's Daemonhunters 2-1 in a Seize Ground/Dawn of War 1,500 point game on Saturday, February 21st.

An orbital bombardment during the first turn all but wiped out an entire squad of Grey Knights. The game quickly turned into a match where each players wasn't trying to gain objectives as much as they were trying to prevent their opponent's ability to claim objectives. Troops units became the preferred target.

By the fifth turn the Daemonhunters were reduced to a Callidus Assassin, two dreadnoughts, three Grey Knight Terminators and two Grey Knights. The Luna Wolves still had their Chapter Master, Telion and a couple of scouts, the remains of a combat squad, a single Marine with a multi-melta that couldn't hit the side of barn with it, a Dreadnought and a Predator that was racing across the board to scrape the remaining Grey Knights off their objective.

The game could have tied if the Knights could just removed the Marines from one of their two objectives. But that wasn't to be and the Luna Wolves won a decisive 2-1 victory.

Havarian 7th Infantry

I've had one squad done for about a month. Now I only have about 12 more, a couple of Leman Russ', a Basalisk, Hellhound, half dozen Chimeras, and a Baneblade and I'll be done.

Simply put, I like the Cadian-style models. I don't feel any need to modify them, twist them, add to them, etc. It's not laziness in modeling, I just think they are perhaps some of the best models put out by GW.

The only exception is the heavy weapons team. How can you have an old fashioned bazooka on a bipod? That simply isn't right.

The woodland cammies are a flash-back to my days in the Corps. Each color is custom mixed to get the shade right. In fact, if you look carefully, you can see one member of the squad in the first picture with a wrong shade of light-green.

As you can imagine, each one takes about 30 minutes to paint. I usually do them two or three at a time - that helps speed things up a bit.
I hope to have more pictures soon!

Plague Marines beat Deamonhunters

Keith's Plague Marines beat Erik's Deamonhunters in a Dawn of War, three objective game on February 15th.

Keith placed my 2 Rhinos with Plague Marines near the right most objective and then placed his Daemon Prince behind cover near the far left objective.

The Daemon Prince had finished off the sole survivor from Erik's squad sent to take the left objective, and it moved towards the center where the HQ and another squad held the middle objective.

One of Keith's first Plague Marine squads deployed is reducing Erik's squad sent to secure the right objective, the terminator squad sent to support the flank was also met with much melta fire. In the back by the ruined building the remaining 3 Plague Marines from one of the squads Keith had deployed on turn 1 to take the right objective destroyed the immobilized and badly damaged Dreadnought that had destroyed their rhino on turn 2 and forced them to walk across the board.

The terminator squad at the right objective were finished off and the squad sent to take the objective was down to it's last man.
The Daemon Prince made short work of the squad sent to support the center, at least what was left of it from a scattered demolisher blast. The HQ still held the center by turn 5. The terminator squad that deep-striked to support the middle withstood a hail of gunfire from 10 rapid fire bolter rounds and 3 rapid fire plasma rounds only to be downed to a single terminator by the rapid fire from the Rhino's twin-linked bolter.

They called the game after that as Keith had the left objective and the right objective was looking very favorable that he would take it, leaving Erik the center objective.

Some things that were learned:
  • Grey Knights can survive loads of shots from anything but a Rhino (3 GK terminators were felled by Rhinos)
  • Grey Knights are hard to see unless you are a Daemon Prince in assault.
  • Nemesis Force weapons are only good if you have guys alive to use them.
  • Sorcerers with flame template psychic attacks are SOL when Grey Knights negate their ability.
