August Apocalypse Game

Want to take part in a legendary game of Warhammer 40k? We will be having an Apocalypse game on the 29th of August. Never played in an apocalypse game? Not a problem! Most of us only have one game in ourselves but loved it.

If you do not own a copy of the Apocalypse book ask someone in the group. You might be able to borrow one or ask any of us questions to get your force ready.

You will be able to take part in the game one of two ways; bring an army list of either 1,000 or 1,500 points. You must preregister for the game so we can make sure we have enough slots for the two teams.

The basic rules are listed below pertaining to your army list.
1. Random teams to be drawn before the game starts
2. No Force Organization Charts
3. Games workshop or Forgeworld Apocalypse unit sheets only (sorry no VDR rules)
4. What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG)
5. Models used must be primed in order to play
6. Strategic Assets will be drawn at random before the game starts, each team will have 3
7. Due to the size of the game we will have time based turns to last no longer than 30 minutes total for all 3 phases of the turn. For example you will have to move, shoot, and assault in 30 minutes as a team.

Each player will be given a card with two secret objectives before the game that they cannot share with anyone that must be completed by the end of the game. One objective will be infantry based and the other will be tank based. You must only complete one. When you complete a personal objective you must declare it when it has occurred. If you do not, it will not count and must be completed again.

The game will start at 10:45am with each side time bidding and will go until a win by one side or 3:00pm at which point a draw will be declared. You will need to pre-register for this game and I will need two people to assist in setting up for the day to be there at 10:00am.

For those of you who are registered for the campaign, you will be awarded an additional random system for a 1,000 point list and two systems for 1,500 point list just for playing that day. The winning team will receive an additional system for the game for their determination in slaughtering the foe.

You must bring three copies of your list typed to play, one will be yours to use during the game. Another will be needed for your “team use” and the third will be needed for post game verification (in case there is a question).

Game itinerary below:
10:00am Setup of table
10:30am All players must be present to begin picking teams
-15 minutes to plan strategy and see what your team has
-You will need to nominate a "Lord General" who will declare when your turns are done
-All strategic assets are in control of the Lord General but may be used by 3 members of your team at any given time
10:45am First shots are fired
1:30pm Break
-20 minutes for Smoking and snacks use the time wisely
-10 minutes for 40k quiz with prize.
2:00pm Second assault wave begins
3:00pm Game is ended and a winners are decided

Club Meeting - 7/18/2009

Well meeting number two is down and out of the way, and once again thank you to everyone who was there. First off it was great seeing new faces at the meeting and getting the chance to talk more with some people.

The bits trade seemed to be a huge success and I can say for myself it seemed like I got a lot of stuff I have been looking for. I hope everyone else found it to be just as helpful.

No need to worry not all the meetings will be that long in the beginning in fact a majority of things will be posted on the blog for discussion or via email for members. As a reminder the following items are currently on the radar for completion.

· Store table projects are coming along nicely, if anyone had a chance to look over the foam piece that Keith took home and fixed you would have seen it will stand the test of time. This piece was then handed off to Steve to be grassed and have trees put on it.
· Colin brought in a huge run that he made which was helpful with the “third table” setup that Ed brought in.
· The Forgeworld order is being placed on the 24th of this month so if you need anything I have to have it by midnight. Email me at eangel17954@yahoo.com
· Upcoming Apocalypse game, yep that’s right we are planning it for the coming weeks and more information to follow.
· Ladder bracket gaming to be setup to be run during the campaign great for those side armies we all have.
· Planetstrike the book is here and I will bring it to the next meeting for everyone to look at. I might even look into playing a game soon with someone.
· Group president – while this is normally a one person show I do not feel anyone of us could give the club 100% of their time at this point so we will nominate meeting presidents. Ed’s next so everyone be ready to be called on.

I want to say thank you again for everyone who attended the meeting and made for an enjoyable day. I personally got to talk to new people and start making plans to crush them in games.

A couple of use went to Fifth Street Diner after gaming and enjoyed ourselves immensely. We decided that we would continue to do this and would like to invite others along as it gave us a chance to sit, relax, and discuss other hobby news. The dinner is cheap for the amount of food you get and bringing $10.00 along plus tip will more than cover you bill.

As a final note, you may have noticed that the stock at Hobbytown has changed for the better and they are carrying more items that we all want. Please remember to support our brick and mortar store as they provide us a place to meet and play.

Space Marines: Building and Painting Space Marine Dreadnoughts

Games Workshop has posted an article on how to build and paint dreadnoughts. Just in case the 18 piece model was too difficult for you. The painting portion of the article does detail some of the basic concepts of washes and highlighting.

New Race?

OK, my uncle's roommate's brother's mother's friend's son went to GamesDay Chicago and overheard this conversation about a new race for 40K coming out. Or maybe it was a human race, but different. Or maybe a non-human race, but Imperial.

Gotta love the rumors.

So here's the latest rumor going around: there will be a new 40K race announced at Chicago's GameDay (July 25th). The race is suppose to be Imperium. The top contenders are Adeptus Mechanius or Traitor Guard.

This is like establishing a religion around the expectation that Jesus will return at a date and time that only one man knows.

We'll know if this one is true on July 26th.

Amon 'Chakai
Commander: Amon 'Chakai

802.M41 Etiamnum III

Private Keeler of the 78th Cadian Regiment 4th Etiamnum III detachment was standing guard of the areas tank depot. It was an ordinary day and highly uneventful. Actually the only eventful thing that happened that day was an oversized mosquito that bit him in the hand. Private Keeler had no idea how important that mosquito bite would turn out to be.

After three days Keeler's hand started to swell so he went to the company medic and the medic took his scalpel and sliced the hand to relive pressure but all it relived was a swarm of flies that engulfed private Keeler and the medic. When the flies dispersed all that remained were two Plaguebearers. The Plaguebearer that used to be the medic took his sword and sliced through thin air which created a hole in the warp. Out of that hole poured more Plaguebearers, Bloodletters, and Daemonettes who massacred all the guardsmen in sight.

Frantic and disoriented, one of the guardsmen put the sector on red alert and brought the reserves of armor and infantry into the fray. Once the guard set up a firing line the daemons weren't able to near the guard for they would be blasted away by their Basilisks and Leman Russes. The other three gods turned to Tzeentch for help. Tzeentch, wanting the planet for himself, sent his flamers. Using their warpfire they obliterated every living thing on the battle field human and daemon alike. After clearing the battle field of all living things, Tzeentch sent his favorite herald Amon 'Chakai to oversee the elimination of all humans on the planet. Not one guardsmen of the 4th Etiamnum III detachment escaped the planet alive.

Amon 'Chakai returned to the warp, and when confronted about his actions at the Rathelian Congregation he said the following, "Don't you see? My master Tzeentch cares not which of the Great Powers of Chaos you serve. In the end, aren't the followers of the Blood God changing valiant warriors into headless corpses? Aren't the worshippers of the Lord of Flies changing strong, healthy bodies into rotting, diseased carcasses? Aren't the disciples of the Dark Prince changing stern, steadfast heroes into slaves to their own senses? Chaos in a struggle to change, you must agree. Change rules all."

Tzeentch just smiled and knew that he would soon surpass all three of his brothers and change would rule the universe.

The Hambali Motor Pool

From Hambali 501 - The Jokers
These pictures are of the Chimeras for the first three squads in my army. I am slowly getting to the point where I can switch out the turret for each squad - heavy bolters against hordes, multi-laser against everyone else.

The first two turrets are from the Predator model. I bought the Chimeras used and they came that way with the autocannon on them. I like the bigger turrets so much I think I'm going to have to replace all of my Chimera turrets with them.
From Hambali 501 - The Jokers
It was a simple conversion to change the autocannon into a multi-laser (plastic tubing is SO cool).

The paint job was done with Krylon Camouflage, which is the best military turkey-sh** green available. Then I washed the whole model with Badab Black. The treads were done with Tin Bitz then brushed with Chainmail. The weapons were done with the black/grey mix I always do my weapons with. Then the whole model was dry brushed with Graveyard Earth, getting more and more aggressive closer to the ground and on the tracks for weathering.
Remind you of the movie poster for The Breakfast Club?
The only thing I did differently is the damage marks. I normally use Tin Bitz then Chainmail to show the paint-chip marks. This time I used Black, Chainmail, then Mithril Silver. I got the idea from the GW blog article on Valkyries. One of their models was weathered like that. I think the results look more natural than the Tin Bitz/Chainmail technique.

The Joker card symbol is actually just a printed image. I sized the image using Word, printed it out on my color printer, then covered the images using clear packing tape on both sides of the paper. The only issue with this is that when you cut them out the edge is still exposed to things like moisture.

I discovered this the hard way when I used Micro-Sol on the "501" decal on the side armor. It seeped into the Joker card and made the ink run. It's no problem with Imperial Guard, though. I just slapped a backpack over the top of it!
Hambali 501 - The Jokers
Of course, being the Jokers I had to paint graffiti on the back hatch. I can hear the Marine players out there now gasping louder than they did when they found out I put wash on the ENTIRE model. But hey - they're Guard. You're not supposed to take them seriously.

In fact, I think my next Chimera will have the "Why So Serious" graffiti on the back!
"Kiss My Fat Las", "No Nid Zone", and "Plague Marines Suck!"

Space Wolves Rumors

Looks like the new Space Wolves codex will be release in October. Of course, the rumors of every unit getting a free upgrade with Wolfen Lightning Claws that wound when you look at your opponent are slightly exaggerated. However, I think the Wolfen Land Raider that costs only 55 points rumor is plausible seeing how GW is pushing mech armies.

Inquisitor Lord Aki

Inquisitor Lord Aki
While never officially declared Extremis Diabolus, Inquisitor Lord Aki is wanted for questioning by the witchhunters of the Ordo Hereticus. His methods are questionable, his flaunting of his own psychic abilities disturbing, and his employment of unofficial assassins make many suspect he has finally succumbed to the temptations of the Dark Gods.

Seen above with an assassin named Har' Meggido, Aki usually wields a Psycannon, using his psyker powers to hold the weapon with one hand.

Aki went "rogue" while searching for the former Inquisitor Siabolst Ghan. He was last seen in the Lost Hope sector.

Siabolst Ghan - Primaris Psyker

Sianbolst Ghan
Siabolst Ghan, once an Inquisitor with the Ordo Malleus, is an Alpha-Level psyker with the ability to bend the will of individuals, making those of a weaker mind follow him as if he were a cult leader. After the Chaos incursion on Gryphon III, Ghan went "rogue" to further investigate the cults which sprung up the initiating uprising.

While it is not unusual for an inquisitor to be classified as rogue during an investigation, the length of time Ghan was rogue troubled the more puritan echelon of the Inquisition. Ghan finally made his report to Inquisitor Lord Aki after fourteen years, but refused to answer summons. It was believed by some that he was killed or his prolonged and augmented age of 224 standard years finally caught up with him. Over time, his rank of Inquisitor was stripped from him for failure to respond to the summon.

Over the years, however, reports of an Inquisitorial psyker operating in theaters of battle started to make their way to Inquisitor Lord Aki. The pysker led battles against xeno and chaos alike by diverting Imperial Guard forces with an Inquisitorial seal.

The identification of the seal was that of Ghan.

In an unusual action, Inquisitor Lord Aki began the search for Ghan himself. Normally, such responsibility would fall under the jurisdiction of the Ordo Hereticus, but Aki took the charge himself with disregard of his other duties.

Since his departure, rumors have surfaced of Aki employing the Dark Powers to wage a war during his investigation. While many considered Aki to be borderline radical in nature, the nature of his war appears to be aimed toward fighting Chaos. Inquisitor Lord Aki has since gone "rogue" and all attempts to communicate with him have failed.

While neither Siabolst Ghan or Inquisitor Lord Aki have been labeled Heretic and Extremis Diabolus, many questions surround their disappearances. Are they working together or against each other? Are they still loyal to the Emperor or have they succumbed to their radical ways and follow a Chaos God? What was the report that Ghan sent to Aki before he disappeared?

While these questions may never be answered, the forces of the Ordo Malleus and Ordo Hereticus are both in search of both men.

Club Meeting - 7/4/2009

By Brother Captian Angelus
Well first of let me thank everyone for making the first meeting of the Berks 40k gaming group. I would like to welcome Jake and Steve to the group and the campaign as well and can say we look forward to many games against the force of the inquisition and chaos they bring to the table.

While there was plenty going on all at once today it was nice to meet fellow members that I have only had the chance to email with.

Out of the whole time of chatting with people I gathered two main objectives for our meeting on July 18th. First we will start off with a little meet and greet for everyone for the first 5 minutes then followed up by a simple bits swap meet. What I suggest is that you gather up any bits or model pieces you are willing to trade or sell and bring them with you for the next meeting. We will have some time to arrange trades of your various model parts. If you happen to have a whole kit or large pieces that you would like to make a lot of money on I would suggest that you send out an email to the group with a list describing the kit, quality, and what you would be looking to get for it. After that is done we will then spend about an hour on making terrain for the table. Now some of you might feel that we have enough terrain at the store already. While there is enough to play small games, we as a gaming group need to set a standard for the community.

We have all seen that Hobbytown is a business before all else and they do have a large group of customers who come by when they see or hear us playing. This is our time to encourage new gamers and seasoned vets to come out of hiding. As of now the table is ours to use freely as long as we respect the store and its customers. The best and easiest way to do this is to fix the table up ourselves. We all have items we are probably willing to donate to the store to expand our hobby. So with that in mind we should spend some time making some decent items that we would be willing to call as the Berks Group Terrain Project.

Remember that after this time we will have gaming occurring and that’s what we all really play for anyways. So let’s make plans, see what we have sitting around and get this group in full swing.

I would like to once again thank everyone for there cooperation today attendance for what I believe will be many more productive and enjoyable meetings to come.

The Imperial Bastion

GW Imperial Bastion
After reading the White Dwarf battle report for the new Planet Strike expansion, my first thought was complete exhilaration. Terrain that is actually part of the game, not just an obstacle or a place for my Jokers to hide behind. My next thought was the realization that this expansion was written by a salesperson.

Don't get me wrong - I think Planet Strike will be awesome and bring a whole new gaming experience for all of us. However, being a brand new gaming experience means kiss your army list good-bye!

Troops are no longer the only objective taker. In fact, with the number of HQ, elites, fast and heavy you will be allowed to take (depending on if your attacker or defender), troops may be hard to find on this new battlefield.

And the battlefield itself needs to be modeled. We're not just talking about trees and small buildings. We're talking bastions with weapons on them and about two dozen craters for each game.

When I look at my army, I see the need for many more heavy choices and some harder hitting elites as defender, and many many many more elites if I'm the attacker. In other words, I need all of the models I wouldn't field in a normal game. Then I need to get the terrain.

Genius! GW found a way to force me to buy all of the models I wouldn't normally buy. Great marketing! And we all know that I'll do it.

However, I do have a problem with the Imperial Bastion model though. First of all, the bolter fire points are all wrong. Being directly on the side only provides 180 coverage. They should be at the corners. And there should be more of them.

The rules for a bastion are the building rules in the Big Rule Book. So only one unit can be in a building at a time, they embark/disembark like vehicles, etc. The one noticeable difference if that if a unit is on the roof, then the building acts like an open-topped vehicle. Why would you have a unit on the roof? Because the guns on the building have a BS2 unless there is a unit that is close enough to use it. Then the gun can be shot at the BS of the unit.

Also, since the bastion needs to be replaced with a crater, why not build a bastion on a crater?

So, here are my plans...
Eddie's Imperial Bastion
The bastion I plan to build will be on a 8"x10" base. I have dozen 8"x10" compressed cardboard pieces, that's why I decided on that size. The walls will be built with 3/16" insulation sheathing, which I have a lot of.

The top of the bastion will have four Icarius Lascannons and can only be accessed from embarking into the building and disembarking onto the roof and will stand 9" off the ground. There will be a parapet three inches from the ground with four heavy bolters. A unit will be able to stand on the parapet and will not be considered embarked in the building or have the building considered open-topped. This is a different unit than the one in the building. I may put a door on the side so the unit can embark into the building if desired (as long as another unit is not already in there). However, if the building is destroyed, it will be the same as standing beside an exploding tank.

The base of the bastion will actually be a crater and the bastion will sit on top of the wreckage. This way, when it is destroyed, all I need to do is remove the building and place the unit(s) within the rubble.

It's my hope to create three or four of these bastions. Once I get the first one done, the others shouldn't take as long to make.

I'll keep posting my work in progress.
