Little Wars

If you have ever wondered how this whole table-top-battle hobby began, read Little Wars by H.G. Wells.

The book was written in 1913 and the full title says it all:

Little Wars (A Game for Boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys' games and books)

The first sentence describes our mental state:

Little Wars is a game of kings - for players in an inferior social position.

It is the original BRB and army codex all rolled into one short book.

Kill Team: Amohan Tep Craftworld versus Black Sky Chapter‏

by Mark VH
IMG_1233
An Eldar scout team approached a large section of ruins in the center of a sprawling metropolis. Stepping cautiously, they slowly advanced their position, taking up spots behind a ruined section of housing, almost leveled to the ground, and looking upon a much higher ground of buildings that had been hit much lighter by the artillery barrage. As the Eldar looked through their scopes into the ruins, they saw they had already been beaten to the ground. They tried as fast as they could to take cover, but it was too late- they had been spotted.

Black Sky Chapter: 5 Scouts- 4 Sniper Rifles, 1 Missile Launcher ---- 7 Tactical Marines, With Sergeant

Amohan-Tep Craftworld- 5 Pathfinders ---- 7 Dire Avengers

Black Sky goes first. Deploys in the section of the map with higher building, forcing me back to a section with all its cover hugging the ground. His scouts are all in buildings surrounding the edge of the map, while Ray's Tactical Squad is deployed tight against a wall towards the center, out of sight.
IMG_1232
I deploy my Pathfinders in a similar fashion, hugging cover closer to the ground, peeking out windows and through bunkers. My Dire Avengers are split up, with 3 on my right (2 behind buildings, out of sight), 2 in the center, and two in the center left.

As the first Eldar Pathfinder looked through his scope, he spotted his target. Steadying his breathing and focusing his mind, he lined up the Space Marine scout in his sights. He was about to pull the trigger, when suddenly the scout's Missile Launcher went off from his position, blasting apart the window where the Pathfinder had been hiding. Rocks and shrapnel hit the Dire Avenger to his right, but failed to wound him through his armor. A second Scout from Black Sky took aim at a Dire Avenger who was beginning to climb out from behind a pile of rubble, but his shot went too high over the Elf's right shoulder from his sudden movement.

The first Pathfinder returned fire rapidly, but missed his shot in his haste. Next to him, his brethren had his shot true, but the shot ricochet off of a Tactical Marines thick armor plating, failing to do any damage. Across the battlefield, yet another loud sniper shot went off from the Eldar Skirmishers, this one landing true right between a scouts eyes, his body falling backward and his Sniper Rifle clattering down the building from where he was sitting. Dire Avengers rushed down the cluttered street, trying to get advantageous positions, but almost all of their Shurikan shots missed their mark or failed to wound. One, however, rounded a corner and spotted a Tactical just meters down the road- Opening fire, the Shuirkan bolts found their mark, and the marine fell dead.
IMG_1228
Turn 1
Marine- A frag missile fire from a scout lands dead on target, wounding a Pathfinder positioned in a window and barely missing the wound on a Dire Avenger positioned to the Sniper's right. The Pathfinder fails his 2+ cover save. Great opening roll. =)

Scout Marine fires his Sniper Rifle, but misses.

Tactical Marines split up, heading towards each of my flanks, going for what would seem to be a pincer move.

Eldar- 3 Pathfinders fire- 1 misses, one fails to wound, but one manages to kill a Scout Sniper positioned in a building. The 4th Pathfinder cannot see.

Dire Avengers move up, looking to set a trap, collective fire kills one tactical marine.

The Tactical Marines rushed the Eldar lines, covered by Sniper and Rocket fire from their Scout brothers. Jumping over rubble piles, they heaved forward- 2 ran up the left Eldar flank and ambushed a Dire Avenger who had looked to ambushed them, and he shot at with bolt pistols, which, although hitting dead on, failed to penetrate the Xenos armor. The two tactical marines charged, once again failing to cause damage, but the Dire Avenger had received the same treatment- It was a stalemate. Meanwhile, as the sergeant advanced with his men, one of his Marines took a right and charged headlong down the street, firing his Bolt Pistol like a madman. Catching the Dire Avenger by surprise, and right in the middle of the street, the shots struck home, bringing the alien to the ground with a crack.

A hiding Pathfinder, yet to make his presence known, quickly but a shot through the side of the frenzied Marines head, ripping right through his helmet, and sending his bolt pistol clattering to the ground. Across the ruined building, a second pathfinder landed a shot right between the eyes of the Scout with the missile launcher, sending him slumped down into the ruined building. A Dire Avenger firing from a window where his comrade had been blown from dropped a Marine that was running up the street, and 3 other Dire Avengers fired onto the Charging Space Marine Sergeant . 3 Shurikan bolts struck home, but the thick armor protected the Sergeant from any sort of harm- He kept running closer.
IMG_1234
Turn 2
Marines- 1 Dire Avenger is locked in assault, another is killed by a bolt pistol.

Eldar- 1 Tactical Marine killed by sniper fire.

1 Tactical Marine killed by a Dire Avenger.

Sergeant survives 3 wounds.

Missile Launcher scout is killed by Sniper Fire.

A crack rang across the frantic battlefield, and a Dire Avenger fell to the ground- his facemask torn open from where the Sniper round had ripped its way through his helmet. The sergeant , frenzied and running straight at the Dire Avenger, swung his chainsword at the Elf. He nimbly dodged, and came around to the back of the sergeant, wrapping his shurikan catapult around the marines neck, attempting to chock him. The Sergeant reached around, and swung the Eldar around him, onto the ground. Standing over him, he brought down his chainsword with a mighty swing, ending the poor souls life. On the other side of the conflict, 2 more Marines had rushed another Dire Avenger, charging him, and beating him to the ground, then shooting him straight in the chest with a bolt pistol. The third Dire Avenger, however, was still managing to dodge everything the Marines were throwing at him, although he hadn't mustered enough strength to kill either of them.

Eldar Snipers returned fire with a vengeance. One shot ripped through a small window, tearing through a weak point in a marines armor, who fell with a scream. A second Pathfinder shot directly into the Sergeant's chest after witnessing the terrible display of slaughter, but the shot just ricocheted harmlessly off of the thick power armor.
IMG_1235
Turn 3
Marines- 1 Dire Avenger killed by Sniper Fire

Sergeant charges and kills a dire avenger, the second one on the right flank is the one killed by the sniper shot. This opens up the Eldar right flank to the Sergeant.

2 Marines charge and kill a Dire Avenger.

Preexisting combat with tacticals and Dire Avenger is a draw.

Eldar- Leadership Checks must now be taken at the beginning of the turn.

2 Marines are killed by rending sniper rifles.

Sergeant survives a 4th wound.

The Sergeant rushed up to the Pathfinder who had shot at him, and brought mighty justice down on the Xenos. All across the battlefield was chaos between the two Patrol groups, and the Sergeant looks through the window to see another one of his Marines drop to a sniper shot, penetrating right through the weak point in his neck. Turning back to the Eldar front, he saw something that truly terrified him- 2 Eldar Vyper Heavy Jetbikes screamed over the hill, descending into the streets with blinding speed, and unleashing fury with laser cannons. These were followed by Eldar Swooping Hawks, descending from the sky and landing on top of buildings, firing and throwing grenades down into the fury of the pitched skirmish. Eldar reinforcements had arrived.

The Sergeant had no choice-

Having lost too many men already, and with reinforcements still hours away, he reluctantly ordered a retreat.
IMG_1237
Turn 4 saw the death of 1 Space Marine due to rending, and the beginning of the force of a leadership check at the beginning of each Marine turn. Unfortunately for Ray, on the first test he made, he rolled an 11- Tactical Withdrawal.

I have to admit, I really didn't deserve to win that one too much. He had me reeling. Only one Dire Avenger was left alive, and he was locked in combat. All I had to shoot with was 3 Snipers. So honestly, hats off to Ray. By all means he should have won this fight.

I have to agree with Ed though, Kill Team is an amazingly fun mission type, and I WILL be buying 200 point of Imperial Guard in the future, just for its use. Thanks for the match Ray, and you can get another go anytime you'd like!

Read the Darn Rules!

by Inquisitor Lord Aki
In preparation for the Berks Spring Assault Tournament I was reading through the rule book. I always like to breeze through the rulebook every once in a while, especially before a major game. It never hurts.

A couple of weeks ago I was playing a small game and an issue came up concerning cover saves. My opponent was shooting through another unit of his and I claimed that I got a cover save. He told me that I wouldn't because he is firing through one of his own units.

That is when Lasteditionitis set in. I think I remember that rule. It sounds familiar. I didn't question it and didn't get a cover save.

When looking through the rulebook the other night I read the "Intervening models" rule at the top of page 21. It states the ALL intervening models, friend or foe, provide a cover save. The only time it doesn't is if they are in the same squad.

Ahhh yes, Lasteditionitis. Everyone who has been playing for longer than the current edition catches it from time to time.

I've read the rulebook, studied it, committed large portions of it to memory. Yet I still catch Lasteditionitis.

This is why I am always telling folks to read the rules. There are three books at my bedside: the Holy Bible, the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer, and the Fifth Edition Rulebook. I usually cycle through at least one of them every night for 10 or 15 minutes before going to sleep.

I suggest you do the same.

And remember, any solider caught under the influence of alcohol or any other inebriant while on his guard will be flogged then shot (Art. 0844/76b).

Black Sky Chapter vs Amohan-Tep Craftworld

by Ray M
IMG_1222
Got back from Modelbahn Ott a little while ago, played three games against Mark's Eldar. Two I used my Space Marines, and one with my Tyranids.

The first game was a tournament prep game, 1,000 points. Mark wiped my poor marines off the table, it was fun, but ugly.

The second game was a kill mission. We both enjoyed the mission a lot. I was on the brink of victory when a bad leadership roll cost me the game. I am up for another kill mission game as soon as possible!

Third game was a 2,000 point game, Eldar against Tyranids.

Here are some of the pictures:
