Why Did You Start Playing?

by Inquisitor Lord Aki
A few weeks ago Moros from Lancashire Wargaming contacted the Berks Warhammer 40K Club to let us know about the happenings in Lancaster County (our neighbors).

At that time we had just set up our forums and decided to create private areas for the clubs in are area. Moros' email could not have come at a better time as the Berks Gaming Club is reaching out to other wargammers.

In the forums Moros wrote an introductory post that was so sincere, so straight-up honest, and, this may sound corny, but so pure that it made me pause, think, and love this game that much more. I am not going to summarize it, but will simply reprint it here (I hope he doesn't mind).

The next time you find yourself arguing over true line-of-sight from the end of a bolter that is modeled in a dramatic pose instead of straight ahead, or you find yourself ticked off at your opponent for using a proxy - again, come back here and read this. When you find yourself in a tournament with a codex, the big rule book, and a dictionary on the table in front of you looking up the definition of the word "or", I hope that you printed this out so you can refer to it and get back to what this game is about: having fun.

As you read this, ask yourself this simple question: Why did you start playing?

Now, Moros' words:

I just wanted to drop a line to the Berks crew and let them know a little about me.

I started war gaming last November. I knew nothing about it save some video game references. In fact, the real reason my interest in 40k was perked was through playing Dawn of War 2. I really took to the style, background, and game play. My friend Jon (Brother Cornelius) and I decided that we should check out this crazy table top thing. We were blown away once we started doing some research on the internet and watching battle reports.

The community for 40k is amazing and we were sucked in. Reid (Agni of Hive Fleet Agni) got me a rulebook for my birthday and Brother C. got me the Chaos Space Marines Codex. Ever since then we've been delving into blogs, the books, the rulebooks, codex, everything we could get our soon to be glued fingers on.

We aren't rolling in cash, so we had to find a way to play without having any models. We saw on Fritz's blog the idea of playing with paper cut outs to represent the models. We chose our colors and started cutting out some circles. Next thing we knew we were playing some matches and we were instantly hooked! How did we not know about this when we were younger!

To be honest with you, I've played tons of games. I can say with certainty that I know what makes them good or not, and 40k is the best game I've ever played from any genre!

After that we started selling it to our friends and we've been really surprised at how much interest there has been. Left and right, everybody we know has pretty much jumped in and loved it! The beginning of Lancashire Gaming was in my basement with no models to speak of and boxes of tissues for terrain. It was amazing!

Our goal is to spread this hobby through the area, there are so many people that would just love to involved in something like this. The pride of modeling and painting, the thrill of victory, and the fulfilling social interaction are all part of what makes 40k and our club awesome.

Thank you, Moros, for reminding us that it is not about the models, the paint job, or the bickering over rules.

It's about the love of the game.

40K News, Rumors, and Stuff You Shouldn't Miss

"Making" Basing Material Part 2 from Painting by Tinweasel
It's always cool to use junk laying around the house to make you bases.

Killteam Rules Archives from Galaxy in Flames
FINALLY - all the rules in one place. Sort of.

40K: The Winners in Detail from Bell of Lost Souls
WarGamesCon top 10 places with a listing of army and items used. If your army ain't on the list, I guess you suck. Sorry Tau. Sorry Chaos. And who are those metal guys? Never heard of them.

How True LOS is Killing Our Games from Bell of Lost Souls
While I completely disagree with this editorial, it is an interesting perspective.

Lava Board III: Painting and Texturing from TinBitz
For those interesting in a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a lava table.

Wound Allocation on Complex Units from Table Top War
It never hurts to read someone's take on the wound allocation rules again. And again. And again. Someday, you may play a game where these rules don't become and issue. And then 6th edition will come out.

The Eldar Dictionary from The Fallen Princes
Cool. We can stop using the English to Elven dictionaries.
